Other Mediascape Visualizations [& Ideas]

One thought is to actually visually display the mediascape using existing mediascape mash-up methods, rather than an animated or illustrated example.

Holy batflaps! It seems as though both me and Melissa had somewhat the same idea about how to view the mediascape/internet. At first I thought this was a bad thing but then I realized that maybe we're onto something. I've mentioned in class a couple times that maybe we need to start viewing the internet as an organic entity-- which a tree certainly is. Some other things worth noting about this metaphor...

-The bark of a tree is actually the 'alive' part. This reminds me of how some parts of the internet seem alive (by which I mean they are constantly changing, evolving, and adding new information) and some parts seem almost dead-- like forgotten message boards and old chatrooms just hanging around out there in cyberspace. However, also like a tree, these dead parts contain a wealth of information-- like examining the rings in the dead part of a tree (from which one may deduce a lot of knowledge- such as what years were dry, wet, cloudy, etc.) this part of the internet can be examined for historical purposes-- where DID the web evolve, and why did it evolve that way (sorry, but I'm also a history major so of course I had to work that into this :P)?

-I chose an apple tree- not because I like Apple computers (lol maybe we should market this idea to them) but because apples represent knowledge in western culture. They also represent the dangers of knowledge (e.g. Eve eating an apple). The mediascape and the rest of the internet, certainly contains within information that could be/is/has been misused.

Frankie Morales:
Subway system (version 1):
This chart is inspired by the subway metaphor I've been focusing on, it needs definite refinement, will be done by tonight, but heres what I've gotten so far. An idea starts off in the brain, is created through vegas or final cut pro or any other video software, and then uploaded to YouTube, which means it is also simultaniously available through Google, MSN, and other Search Engines. The concept spreads throughout the social networks and eventually reaches the point of word of mouth communication, that is the internet invading meatspace. By then, TV and Print news outlets have probably picked up on the viral video and have it published.

The words of the late and brillaint Terence McKenna - "YOU are the center of the mandala" - inspired my above understanding of the mediscape. I've place Davinci's projection of man onto a rendering of the Qaballa. Instead of the the divine sephiroths (or nodes) that usually make of this religious model, I've superimposed various elements of the mediscape, some of which I feel sort of correlate to the Qaballa's placement of each node and its significance upon the human body (e.g. wikipedia embodies knowledge, ergo I've thrown that bad boy down on the head). This whole work is then, as you can see, placed inside a mandala, which is further surrounded in a sort of greater universe of communication mediums that you can find throughout the net. So there :)

(note - the above image can be downsized, but much of the font will be difficult to read, hence the slightly obnoxious size)

Frankie Morales: "going on the theme of each person is kind of a chemical compound, and
they link together in certain ways with other people. When these
"compounds" chain up they can create new and better systems, at least
that was the general idea I was running with."
